Happy St George's Day! Though recognised as the patron saint of the UK, there are a few things you may not have known about him...
🇹🇷 St George wasn't English. He was born in the 3rd Centrury in Cappodocia (modern day Turkey)
🦾He wasn't a Knight - it's more likely he was an officer in the Roman army.
💀He was a martyr - executed for refusing to make a sacrifice in honour of the pagan gods.
🏴He never visited England - the St George cross was not used to represent England until the reign of Henry VIII
🐉The dragon came later - the story goes that St George rode into Silene (modern day Libya) to free the city from a dragon who had a taste for humans!
⌚️He was a Saint for 1000 years before the "Holiday". He was canonised in 494 AD by Pope Gelasius but the feast day only came into place in the UK after the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. After the unification of England and Scotland in 1707 the day held less significance - which is why it isn't recognised as a public holiday.
🌎England shares St George as a patron saint with Venice, Genoa, Portugal, Ethiopia and Catalonia - among others.
